Cadiz Culinary Food & TAPAS Tour

Spanish Tortilla

Madrid

Andalucia is the historic home of tapas, and one legend of its origins has Cadiz as the very birthplace of small plate dining. The story goes that King Alfonso XIII was visiting the city and drinking a sherry down at Ventorrillo del Chato beach when the wind blew sand into his glass. Coming to the rescue, so a waiter covered it with a lid-like slice of ham.

On this private tour with an expert guide you’ll stop at market stalls and taverna counters to try some of the local specialities. These have since made this city one of Spain’s great places to eat and drink: fried fishcakes made with Mediterranean shrimp, prime-cut beef from the Retin hills, fino and manzanilla sherries made with palomino grapes from the surrounding coastal countryside.

En route, you’ll hear about the first vines planted on these shores by the ancient Phoenicians, the fortified wines that Christopher Columbus took with him to the New World, and the exotic new foods that came back with him on Spanish treasure ships. This includes the humble potato, now mixed with peppers, olive oil, tuna and paprika to make the signature Cádiz tapas dish, papas aliñás.
