El Escorial Day Trip from madrid

cathedral at el escorial

Madrid

El Escorial was built by Philip II as a final resting place where he could be close to God. Construction of El Escorial began in 1563 and ended in 1584. It was the first and perhaps the finest example of Herrerian architecture, which was the final stage of Spanish renaissance architecture. Although a monastery, it was also a military structure and one of the four main royal palaces. The other four are: the summer palace Aranjuez, The Royal Palace in Madrid and nearby La Granja- Madrid’s answer to Versailles. This extraordinary regal complex comprises a palace, basilica, monastery, school and pantheon to the Spanish monarchs.

Its pretty town of San Lorenzo de El Escorial makes a relaxing stop for lunch before returning to Madrid, just an hour-long train away.
